Thrush is a fungus that usually affects areas like the mouth and genitals. The yeast that causes thrush can cause deadly infections, but for most people with a strong immune system, thrush is an inconvenience, not a danger.

Thrush Mouth
In fact, most of the time thrush goes away on its own, but serious cases may involve prescription of medication. This is true particularly for infants, and infant thrush should always be treated by a doctor. However, there are also a number of home remedies for thrush that can be very effective.

Getting rid of thrush is all about restoring the balance of yeast in your body. The yeast is always there, and thrush only occurs when the balance of the body is thrown off.

For instance, there is always yeast in the mouth, but a person’s immune system and natural bacteria normally keep it in check. It is also important to remember that if the balance is off in one area, it is likely disturbed in the entire body, and therefore the whole body must be treated.

Home Remedies for Thrush

One easy cure is to start eating more probiotic foods for thrush in the mouth. This can get rid of thrush and keep it from coming back. Yoghurt is one such food, but it is important to select yoghurt that has live bacteria in it for these purposes.

Unsweetened and unflavored yoghurt will work best because this doesn’t give the yeast anything to feed on, but if that is intolerable, these modified yoghurts will work as well. Some people advise holding the yoghurt in the mouth for a short time, but others say that simply eating the yoghurt is sufficient.

Plantain seeds are thought to be a good topical remedy for thrush. The seeds are covered in water and left to soak overnight, creating a gel. This substance is then applied directly to the thrush site with a cotton swab. This should be done for three days, and the thrush should disappear. If plantain seeds are not available, you can look for psyllium seeds, which are the same thing.

Nursing infants with thrush in the mouth can unfortunately spread thrush to the nipples of their mothers, just as the mother can spread it to the child. It is important to take care of the thrush infection in both sites. A good way to clean the nipples after breastfeeding is to rinse them with one tablespoon of vinegar mixed with one cup of water, and apply an antifungal cream.

The mother should also take care to boost her immune system and avoid sugary foods in order to keep the thrush infection from getting out of hand. While it may be uncomfortable, most sources say that thrush is not a reason to stop breastfeeding, as the benefits to both the mother and child far outweigh the dangers presented by thrush.

Oral Thrush Treatment

There are also a few herbal home remedies for thrush that are thought to be effective in adults. Lapacho tea is thought to be particularly effective, but as this bark can have negative side effects, it is important to limit the amount of bark used to no more than two teaspoons.

It is particularly beneficial because it is effective on yeast infections anywhere in the body. Echinacea is also said to be a successful when taken internally. Tea tree oil and oil of oregano are both great anti-fungal topical remedies, and they only need to be applied once per day.

These are also all excellent preventative measures for people who are prone to thrush in the mouth or elsewehere. Keeping thrush away in the first place may be the key to avoiding a long battle with the fungus, and possibly to an improvement in overall health as well.
