Learn how to plant an herb garden inside or outside your home so you always have fresh spices! Container herb gardens and raised beds make wonderful herb garden layouts. Have you tried a variety mix of herb garden seed?
There is something wonderful in the feeling of growing your own herbs at home. Their delicate flowers and sweet aromas fill the home, making it an inviting and natural setting to relax in. If you enjoy cooking, the experience can't be beat when you use fresh herbs right from your own backyard. If you have decided to plant an herb garden, being prepared is the best step to success.
Planting an Herb Garden
First, make sure that where you live can support this type of plant. They will need to be warm and have plenty of sunlight; at least six hours per day. Many people receive enough light, but the temperature can be an issue when trying to grow. Have you thought about having indoor plants in your windowsills and balconies?

If you do decide to have an outdoor herb garden, select an area that won't be disturbed and won't be covered in shade from trees and other large plants. It is quite incredible just how many herbs you can grow in a space of only a few square feet. If you've never grown herbs before, start small and expand your scope as you gain experience.
Creating a Container Herb Garden
If you have selected to have an indoor herb garden, there is a large variety of containers you can use to grow in. Many people like to have several different flower pots to create a cascading or grouping effect. These can be bought cheaply at garage sales, or brand new at any home and garden supply store.
You can also use other herb garden containers such as tin wash bins, watering troughs, crates, vintage cooking pots and bowls, beautiful pottery and ceramics, or wide mouthed vases. The only thing you need to remember is that herbs must have proper drainage to prevent root rot, so be sure that there are enough holes in the bottom to allow excess water out.
Making an Outdoor Herb Garden
Living in a warm climate, it can be very nice to have a beautiful little patch in your backyard just for herbs and flowers to grow in. Some people even grow these together with their vegetables for an informal, country-style look. If you like the idea of a raised bed, you will need some concrete blocks and good potting soil to begin with.
Arrange your blocks either in a square, circle, or oval design, and fill the inside space with a thick layer of potting soil. This sets up a good, secluded space for your herbs to grow in. If you want to plant an herb garden without raising it, selecting a small area and tracing the edges with river rocks can be a cute way to encase it in a natural setting.

After you have set up the area in which your herbs will grow, decide what herbs you want to have, and how you will arrange them. Many people arrange their herbs by color, by fragrance, by variety (such as mint), between flowering and non-flowering, and by height.
You can also group your herbs by those that like full sunlight and those that need partial shade. If you like mostly edible herbs, choose a variety that you use most when you are cooking. If you simply love the smell and flower of an herb, choose ones that you will be happy growing in your home. Most of all, have fun while you learn how to plant an herb garden for yourself.
