Pink Eye Home Remedies

Use these simple pink eye home remedies to reduce redness and irritation quickly. Pink eye home treatment doesn't take long and will start healing the first day.

Bacterial pink eye is also called conjunctivitis. It is caused by an infection in the eye that inflames the veins and capillaries. Pink eye can also be caused by allergies, disease, or particles in the eye that shouldn't be there.

More often than not, cold viruses and bacteria cause pink eye. These may be quite annoying for you as medicine doesn't treat viruses, but thankfully this also means that they go away naturally on their own.

Sometimes, the pink eye causes are a result of either chlamydia or gonorrhea. This is quite rare in the United States and Europe. However, it is a very common illness in developing countries throughout the world.

Because pink eye is contagious, you will want to make sure that you wash your hands often, avoid touching your eye, and simply remain hygienic.

Herbal Pink Eye Home Remedies

Chamomile tea is one of the best home remedies for pink eye due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Make sure that the tea you are using contains only chamomile, and then follow one of these methods:

  • Steep the tea bags in hot water, cool them, and then hold against your eye for 10-15 minutes twice daily.
  • Cool the fresh chamomile tea and use it to wash your eye.
  • Dip cotton balls in fresh cooled chamomile tea and wipe around the edges of the afflicted eye.

Calendula is also a good option for treating pink eye if you don't happen to have any chamomile.

If you suspect that your pink eye has been caused by allergies (as opposed to a bacterial infection), Eyebright is the best herb to use. Simply mix a few drops into cool water and use as an eyewash several times per day.

Remember that pink eye usually goes away naturally within 2-3 days, so be patient and take care of your body. A daily multivitamin can help a lot. If it doesn't go away within a reasonable amount of time, be sure to see your doctor.
