Mouth Yeast Infection

Thrush Symptoms

The best advice on how to know if you have a mouth yeast infection and how you can treat and prevent it. Treating yeast infections in men, women and children is easy with natural home remedies on how to cure yeast infection.

A mouth yeast infection is called “thrush” in people, and is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Candida is a natural fungus that lives in your body and, in normal amounts, is not harmful. However, if your immune system is weakened for any reason, that fungus can proliferate into unhealthy levels and causes yeast infections.

Mouth Thrush Development

Thrush usually develops very quickly in your mouth without much warning, and some people may even have a recurring problem with it. You can tell you have it if you notice white lesions in your mouth or on your tongue, pain when you try to swallow, sensitive spots that may bleed when brushed, and even a fever if the problem goes on without treatment.

Usually, a mouth yeast infection is treated with oral antifungal medications. Either your doctor or your dentist can usually prescribe these for you, and it may take one to two weeks for the symptoms to be clear and the excess Candida killed.

However, the problem often lies in that the reason you got thrush in the first place may have an underlying medical reason. It is a good idea to see your doctor so they can make sure that it wasn't caused by any other problems your body might have.

You may be more at risk than most people if you fit into one of the following categories of thrush causes:

  • Babies
  • People taking antibiotics
  • Drug abusers
  • Those who use dentures
  • Those with diabetes

Preventing Yeast Infections

There are few things you can do as well to prevent the issue from happening again. The first thing you should do is brush and floss your teeth twice per day to keep bad bacteria from lingering and causing overgrowth.

You should also avoid sugary foods, beer and wine which may encourage Candida to grow. Lastly, most doctors will advise you to stop using mouthwashes, because they can kill the good bacteria and microorganisms that regulate the bad ones in your mouth.
