How to start making an herb garden at home. Try these herb garden layouts for a seasonal or perennial herb garden seed patch.

Grocery store prices and selection on fresh herbs often aren’t very good, but starting an herb garden yourself can be a simple way to grow them organically at home.  The first step is to do your planning to create a small garden you can be proud of.

Decide whether you want herbs for cooking with, just for the lovely smell in your home, or because you would like some indoor vegetation and flowers. If you are going the cooking route, focus your types of seeds on ones that you will use most often in food. Of course, you can always add in some pretty flowering ones for effect as well. Plan on making an herb garden that is centered around your interests.

Starting An Herb Garden

The next step is to find out what type of planting area you will use. Do you have pots and containers on your patio? A windowsill planter in your kitchen window? Perhaps you have a small raised garden bed in your yard you would like to use. Decide how much space you have, and how many different types of herbs you want to grow.

Next you will need to select different herbs. This can be a little tricky because each has its own needs, but with a little planning it can turn out nicely. Some herbs prefer full sunlight; others need partial shade or mostly shade to grow.

Indoor Herb Gardens

Some seeds need to be started indoors; others should be started from a cutting of another plant. It is very important to read the instructions and understand what each herb needs to grow. Temperature and humidity matter, but this is something you can easily control in your home by keeping your home heated and misting water over the young plants if needed to start making an herb garden.

The next step is to group your herbs according to their needs. Place the full-sunlight herbs in a container or area where they will get good light, and the shady-loving plants in a darker area or behind larger plants that can provide shade. Make sure that your herbs are not grouped too closely, but have sufficient space to grow in according to their instructions. Be patient while you are waiting to see them pop through the soil; many seeds take several weeks to show.

Caring for A Miniature Herb Garden

Taking care of your herbs properly is essential to keeping them growing strong. Make sure you weed often to stop any competition before it gets out of hand. Another tip is to water thoroughly and completely soak the soil to help your little plants grow. You must, however, have good drainage or rot will occur.

It is also important to make sure that they are staying warm enough, as most plants will die in cold temperatures. If your plants have been outdoors all summer and the frost is coming, it is easy to dig them up and put them in some indoor pots to keep them alive.

Once your plants have matured, you may snip off a leaf or two to use while cooking, or for making fresh tea. You might even consider making your own potpourri to place around the house. Making an herb garden is a great way to add fresh flavors to food, add beautiful greenery to your home, start a fun project with your kids, and just revel in the good feeling that comes with having something of your own that you created.
