Homemade Lotion Steps and Instructions

Steps to Preparing Homemade Lotions for Healthy Hands, Feet and Skin

Ready to make your own homemade lotion? Here are the step-by-step instructions and ingredients you will need to create skin bliss lotion.

Step One: Ingredients for Making Lotions

    What You Will Need:
  • Two standard measuring cups
  • Two small saucepans (to fit the width of the measuring cup)
  • 1 1/8 cups water
  • 1/4 cup emulsifying wax
  • 2/3 cups olive, coconut, or cod liver oil
  • Essential oil of your choice

Step Two

Fill the pan with water and put it on a medium heat stove. Once the water begins to boil, mix the wax and oil together in the glass measuring cup, and place the cup in the water. This creates a way for the water to boil around the mixture and melt it, without causing it to burn.

Step Three

Using another small saucepan, bring the 1 1/8 cups of water to a boil. After it has boiled, pour it into your second measuring glass. Next your task is to pour the melted wax and oil mixture into the heated water. Congratulations, you've made a basic homemade lotion!

While the lotion is hot, you will notice that it isn't very thick or creamy. Don't worry though, because once it cools it will begin to thicken and feel like true organic lotion.

Step Four

Now is the time to add your fragrances. Adding essential oils of jasmine, lavender, or vanilla is a great way to treat your skin and smell wonderful. You can also use a perfume of your choice, but remember that perfumes generally contain alcohol which may irritate your skin.

If you can't decide which scent you would like to use in your natural body lotions, try separating out several tiny pots of it to use as "testers", and add different oils and fragrances to each. Once you have chosen a favorite, go ahead and add the scent the the whole bottle!

Make sure you mix the moisturizer and fragrances well before your pour it into its bottle. Place a cap over the bottle and keep it in a cool place for later use.

Enjoy your new scented body moisturizer!
