Home Made Face Masks

Since the invention of the face mask, teenage girls have been pioneers of face mask research. At slumber parties all over the world they have fearlessly put on their faces things that no sane adult would ever think to apply.

These brave young dependents are a testament to the idea that you don’t have to go out and buy fancy ingredients to get the perfect complexion. No, the keys to skin health can be found right in your own kitchen.

Joking aside, it is true that items we normally think of as food can make excellent homemade face masks. There have been arguments attesting to the virtues of almost all fruits and vegetables in the known universe when applied as homemade face masks. Coffee, tea, honey, and oatmeal are also very popular ingredients. Of course, if you happen to have some tea tree, sage, sandalwood, or lavender oil around, you can take any of these face masks up a notch, as these all make great homeopathic skin remedies.

Any of these ingredients can be combined, but you should keep in mind your skin type for maximum benefits. For oily skin, you should use masks that contain mud or other ingredients that will help draw out the oil. Dry skin, on the other hand, benefits most from homemade face masks that are full of moisture.

While all of these face masks are certainly excellent, there are a few that rise above the rest. One unlikely favorite is the chocolate face mask. This provides a great facial because it moisturizes the skin and stimulates the mind. The smell of this facial is very relaxing for chocolate lovers.

The mask itself is made of 1/3 cup cocoa powder, 1/3 cup honey, one tablespoon of plain yoghurt, and enough oatmeal to make it somewhat stiff (a few heaping teaspoons should do). Once your face is clean, rub the mask all over your face first to exfoliate, then pat the mask onto the skin and let it sit.

Another particularly good mask is made of only carrots. This mask is perfect for oily skin or wrinkles. Very simply, the mask is made of warm mashed carrots. They should be cooked for the least amount of time possible to achieve a mashed appearance, and should be allowed to cool to a comfortable temperature before being applied to the face. However, the paste should be applied warm as the heat helps to open the pores.

This last facial mask is one everyone should try, but it’s not for the weak of heart. The infamous kitty litter facial is one of the most clever and economical ways to get a salon-quality face mask at a fraction of the cost. Bentonite clay, which is commonly used in salons, is also used to make natural clay cat litter.

To use the litter as a facial, you must first make sure that it is unscented and free of toxins. Then, take a small amount of clean litter and place it in a bowl. You will then use the back of a spoon to grind it down into powder, or as close as you can get it.

Add small amounts of water until you have a thick paste, and apply it to a clean face. The mask will harden, but you can rinse it off at any time. To improve on the original mask, you can also add chamomile oil, aloe vera, or lemon before you mix it into a paste. The ingredients will amplify the cleansing power of the mask.

As with any natural cure, it is important to be attuned to what works best for you. Knowing your skin type can help, but getting a handle on the best ingredients for your homemade face masks will generally take some experimenting. The most important things to remember are to keep the mask away from your eyes and to stop using anything that causes irritation immediately. Other than that, embrace your teenage girl and head to the kitchen!
