There is nothing you can do to get rid of your cold sores permanently, but there are some things you can do to make them less frequent and less of a nuisance.

First of all, figure out what gives you an outbreak. Most people with cold sores have a “trigger.” This may be (and often is) stress, or perhaps exposure to some element. If you can figure out what is making your cold sores come out of hiding, you can figure out how to keep them away. If you’ve already got that tingling sensation you get right before an outbreak, it’s too late for preventative measures. Relaxation will help you heal faster, but it’s important to take other steps as well.
Natural Cures for Cold Sores
Lysine, an essential amino acid, has been shown to inhibit herpes outbreaks. You get lysine from the foods you eat: milk, cheese, wheat germ, and eggs are all great sources of lysine. By increasing the lysine in your diet, you’ll heal faster. However, you need to be sure to remove foods that are rich in arginine from your diet to help the lysine get absorbed.
That means no chocolate, no cola, and no peanuts until you’re healed. You can also try a lysine ointment directly on the cold sore. Since cold sores are a chronic condition, you might want to go ahead and invest in something proven effective like lysine ointment.
Comfrey salve is another great natural cure that can be easily made at home. Comfrey helps your body to replace dying cells, which helps you heal faster. It has excellent restorative properties. Comfrey salve can be used for a variety of skin injuries, including burns and acne. It’s a great thing to have around the house and works well for home remedies for cold sores.
To make a comfrey salve, you need one ounce of comfrey leaves, one ounce of chamomile, and one ounce of lavender flowers. Heat these ingredients with one cup of high grade olive oil in a double boiler for thirty minutes, stirring constantly. Pour the entire mixture into another container through a strainer, discarding any remaining solids. Melt two ounces of beeswax in your double boiler, add your herb-infused oil, and stir until it’s fully blended.

While it’s still warm, pour your salve into its permanent container (a shallow tin works well) and let it cool. To use your comfrey salve, prick the cold sore and apply the salve. Remember never to ingest comfrey as it can cause liver damage. The amount in a salve that you might get in your mouth in nothing to worry about; just don’t go eating the plant.
As far as things you have lying around the house to treat cold sores, aloe vera provides a certain amount of soothing relief from the itching and burning related to these sores. Covering a cold sore with petroleum jelly or another protective balm will protect the sore from infection with bacteria, as well as speeding up healing.
