Choosing an herb garden planting design that compliments your home and budget is one of the first steps in starting. Look at different herb garden containers and herb garden ideas to brighten up your home! For a special effect, try mixed herb garden seed.

Design An Herb Garden

Herb garden layouts usually revolve around the needs of the grower, and the purpose of the garden. Your herb garden can be as formal or country style as you like, and can contain just about any plant you would like. Some people prefer to stick to herbs only, while others mix in vegetables, flowers, and herbal seeds.

Another important part of the design is the layout of your garden. Perhaps you only have room for a few plants in a section of your kitchen, or maybe you have a large yard that could be turned into an elegant garden space.

You will want to decide what type of look you are trying to achieve. Are you hoping to have brick pathways and a birdbath focal point at the center? Or would you simply like to incorporate a section of your vegetable and flower garden for a few different cooking herbs?

Make sure you know what type of herbs you want to grow. Most herbs require at least four to six hours of sunlight per day and need to grow at about room temperature.

You will need to decide how you will separate the partial shade herbs and the full sunlight loving herbs. You can plant some larger plants to shade the herbs that need that type of environment if there is a lot of sun in your area.

With the technicalities of sunlight needs out of the way, you will want to create a “look” that suits your home and lifestyle. If you don't have time to weed and trim often and can't hire anyone to do it, you probably won't want to create a large, formal English herb garden.

Make sure that what you have in mind is something you can manage, and that it will complement your home. A simple, yet pretty country style herb garden planting design can make a great addition to your yard if you live in the suburbs or outside of town.
