I began building this website in October 2008 as a way to share a more natural and health-oriented way of living. I became interested in home remedies when I noticed a few interesting coincidences...
One time I ended up putting toothpaste on a pimple because I ran out of benzoyl peroxide, and it healed it. I also remember seeing how coconut oil ran completely off the spoon in warm water, while vegetable oil required harsh dish soap to remove!
I then became even more interested when I realized that they weren't all old wives tales. Tea tree oil really did make my tooth stop hurting. Apple cider vinegar cleared up my skin without drying it out, unlike all of the other store products I had tried.
Apple cider vinegar also made my hair shinier than I'd seen in a decade. I thought these were "hear-say" things that didn't really work, but once I researched the science behind some of the claims, and then experimented myself, I started to understand how nature provides us with everything we need.
Later I began watching nutritional documentaries such as Forks Over Knives, Hungry For Change, and Food Matters. I read about Orthomolecular Medicine and how nutrients can completely heal our bodies. I was hooked.
I learned a lot about home remedies and healthy preventions and began living as naturally as possible to minimize the chemical damage that takes place in daily life.
A few years ago, I had no idea how to build a website. I'm not particularly computer-savvy, and I didn't consider myself much of a writer either.
I had always had a dream of running a small business that helped others in some way- in this case, becoming healthier at little cost. I had been a pet groomer for nearly five years at the time, and, while there were parts of my job that I loved, I knew it wasn't my "forever career."
I had big dreams of taking a year off to backpack around the world with just a few sets of clothes and my laptop in my pack. I wanted travel to be a part of my life permanently, and to be able to work from anywhere in the world.
I knew that some people were successfully creating online businesses, that much was obvious. But most of them were large companies and corporations who could hire professionals.
I simply didn't have the technical know-how to build a site from scratch. Yes, there were plenty of options such as WordPress and Blogger, but it became abundantly clear to me that very, very few of these blogs ever received enough traffic to build a business from it.
I happened across Site Build It! in 2007 and decided that sharing my knowledge would be the perfect business for me. I had always wanted to find a way to help people, and I thought that if my research could improve the lives of just a few people who read my pages, it would be well worth it.
I did so much research on SBI!, looking everywhere for evidence of a scam or get-rich-quick operation. I could find none. I was intrigued, but still skeptical. For months I relentlessly searched, all the while reading the ever-helpful free Sitesell books
A few months later I was surprised to find out that my aunt had been quietly working on her own SBI website about gardening, and was doing very well with it. Seeing her success was a turning point for me.
I began to realize that, with enough hard work, I could make my small offering to the world and gain the freedom I desired by building this site.
SBI! gave me all of the tools, knowledge, and encouragement to see it through. And so here I am now, a few years later, still growing herbs and testing remedies and recipes and feeling extraordinarily lucky that my dream of building an online business has come true! I can easily work from any WiFi location in the world, and will be leaving on my year long backpacking trip in September 2014.
One of the best things about this website is that it keeps earning money and helping others even when I don't have time to be on my computer. I can take a vacation or work on my garden for a few weeks at a time and my website will simply keep growing on its own.
If I've noticed one thing from talking with family, friends, and coworkers, it's that we are all searching for one thing that will bring us happiness- freedom. It's in our nature. Human beings gain motivation when they focus on their own projects that they enjoy.
We desire the freedom to have hobbies, to spend time with our families, and to seek adventures that we haven't yet experienced. The sad fact is that most "jobs" restrict these opportunities and rarely offer meaningful work that we love while we are there.
The good side, however, is that every person has knowledge on a topic that can become an online business. Whether they know how to redesign homes on a budget or create beautiful wedding cakes or have learned to make tasty gluten-free recipes for Celiac's disease...
Each of us has a knowledge, a passion, or a hobby that could be turned into an E-business... one that changes the world in a small way and gives its creator more freedom to live and work.
What do you have to share?
